Penance
I wonder if prepping a painting - meticulously mapping out details of shadow and light in pencil, followed by repeating the strokes a little faster, but not much, and smoother with a fine brush that needs to be recharged repeatedly - is a kind of penance for the ease with which I paint in oils?
